Hurn Field Stewardship

Come help care for the amazing Hurn Field Conservation Area at our first work party of the year! This 120 acre conservation area along the wild and scenic Skagit River is our public viewing area for the local population of elk. Although the Nooksack elk is the most notable of this area's residents, they are far from the only wildlife here! The field also provides foraging habitat for a variety of insect eating animals such as swallows, swifts, flycatchers, and several species of bats. Rodents and small birds living in the open field feed on insects and attract birds of prey such as northern harriers, owls, hawks, and eagles. House Slough, which is also on this property, is accessible to fish from the Skagit River and provides rearing habitat for juvenile Coho salmon and trout. The slough also currently features several beaver dams and lodges. We're seeking hardy hands to help re-open wildlife corridors by removing some old fencing from the back edge of our property. If you arrive early, you might be lucky enough to spot resident elk hanging out in the main field. To bring: Your favorite leather work gloves (SLT will provide extras for those who forget or don't own any!), sturdy boots, long pants and long sleeves, a water bottle and lunch to enjoy on the property. Please dress for the weather. Any questions please email volunteer@skagitlandtrust.org. SLT will bring extra gloves, tools, and refreshments. Directions: Take Highway 20 east to the scenic pullout (about 3 miles west of Concrete). Directions: https://goo.gl/maps/iEewUAeeg2L2
