The STEM planning process coincides with the redevelopment of the Northern State campus as a Sedro-Woolley Innovation For Tomorrow (SWIFT Center). The Center’s first tenant is expected to be Janicki Bioenergy. It is anticipated that hundreds of STEM jobs could be located at the Center in the next five years.

Our second presentation from the Sedro- Woolley School District is students from Steve McCartt's broadcasting class

Sedro-Woolley High School has started a new program this year aimed at getting events and school news out on the airwaves. The Broadcasting Class taught by Steve McCartt has begun regular broadcasts of a monthly school news program and the class has also begun broadcasting events such as band concerts, assemblies and sporting events. “The district has invested in equipment that allows us to broadcast school events as they happen,” said McCartt, “We have a Tricaster, three cameras and a sound board and we can do a live feed of events such as choir concerts, basketball games and other district events.” In addition to the live events the class also puts together a monthly news program featuring students, activities and news about the school. “It is sort of like the school newspaper on TV,” McCartt pointed out.

The students in the class write the stories, conduct on air interviews, capture supporting footage and edit the piece into two to three minute segments that become part of the monthly broadcast. “Eventually we would like to do weekly broadcasts and announcements, but right now we are still learning the ropes." The students are getting experience learning how to make sure their coverage is balanced and fair as well as accurate according to McCartt. The program is looking to partner up with Sedro-Woolley and perhaps run some community events as well. “The potential of what we can do is exciting,” said McCartt, “The Kids are really charged up about the program.”
